What is Pritikin Diet?

Have you heard about a diet type called the Pritikin diet? It is another type of eating program that were initially created by Nathan Pritikin. This article will give you some ideas about this type of diet and how it can contribute to your weight loss regimen.

Pritikin Diet or commonly known as Pritikin Principle, includes a low-fat but high-carbohydrate eating program. It is actually in contrast of Atkins diet which were previously featured in this blog. The main focus is similar to Mediterranean diet which centers in vegetables, fruits and high-fiber products.

Like any other diet program, Nathan Pritikin focused his program on eating a low-fat, low- calorie diet which can be done through vegetable and fruit consumption with pretty limited fatty content from calorie foods. So if you are looking for an effective weight loss diet, then Pritikin principle might be the right program for you.

There are quite a good number of followers for this diet making it more famous. Because of this, some research were added which includes “Calorie Density Solution”. This diet involves low-calorie dense foods such as apples, red rice and many others for a full week. Low calorie foods can help reduce your hunger which will result to weight loss.

Calorie density diet aims to target weight loss, which is based on some research about pritikin principles. When you say calorie density, it is the amount of calories in a given weight of food. Some dieters found this low-calorie dense diet to be effective and satisfying eating program. Also, Pritikin diet also promotes regular exercise and other stress-reduction techniques, to support or aid this type of diet program.

Although Pritikin diet aims to achieve optimum health through limiting calories and fat consumption, it does have some controversies and criticisms. For example, The American Heart Association recommends a diet with 25% to 35% of calories from fat, while Pritikin diet limits it to just 10%. Aside from giving taste to your meal, dietary fats has many other important functions which Pritikin diet followers won’t take advantage of.

With today’s advanced researches on different types of fats, health experts learned the many benefits of omega-3 fats including its heart-protection properties. Without dietary fats (that Pritikin diet is promoting to reduce), other vitamins such as A, D, E and K will not be able to spread out in the entire body and perform its functions.

This is the main issue with regards to Pritikin diet. I suggest that you apply this type of diet for just a week or two and then slowly put some fats into your daily meals. Remember that your diet should compose of balanced nutrition which includes protein, carbohydrates and of course fats. Too much or too little consumption on one of these nutrients will have an adverse effects on your body. So if you want to lose weight in a more safer way, monitor your eating habit and make your diet more balanced for optimum health and fitness!
